Artist Statement
Photography is commonly understood as a means of preserving moments, fixing fragments of our lives in time. Yet memory is neither fixed nor faithful. It evolves with us, shaped by experiences, emotions and the passage of time. The people and places we remember are not necessarily as they once were, but as they have come to exist within us.
Some of my most enduring recollections belong to entirely ordinary moments. Their significance may have escaped me when they occurred, only to emerge years later. Often, no photographs of these moments exist. They survive as impressions, incomplete and elusive, yet awakening a sudden surge of emotion and a rush of blood.
Rush of Blood has been created using a pinhole camera and prolonged exposures making the passage of time an organic element of each photograph.
